Wreck-It Ralph

 Director: Rich Moore

Starring: John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jane Lynch, Jack McBrayer

Runtime: 108 mins

Disney produced ‘Wreck-It Ralph’ delves into the 8-bit vintage video game domain. Ralph (John C. Reilly) is destiny changing antagonist-turned-protagonist, after an unceremonious departure from his tree stomp abode; in order for an array of apartments to be constructed. Ralph commences his colorful journey via a ‘Halo’ esque, sci-fi first person shooter ‘Hero’s Duty’; subsequently to candy-centric ‘Sugar Rush’, where he forms an effervescent comraderie with Vanellope von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman). Initially, neither character sees eye-to-eye on a platonic level, yet they operate in spite as a tangible unit throughout this wholesome slice of unadulterated, family fun.

‘I took the notion of what is the life of video game characters behind the scenes when the games aren’t being played’ explained Rich Moore (Director).

Moore, who had tenures with US rating juggernauts ‘Futurama’ and ‘The Simpsons’ drafted two versions of the fantasy-filled ‘Wreck-It Ralph’ in a decade timeframe before production fully initiated.

Fix It Felix Jr (Jack McBrayer – ’30 Rock’) is collosal bullseye of Ralph, and polar opposite of the reformed brute. Felix casually undertakes repairments by virtue of his father’s trusted, magical hammer. However, when Ralph goes AWOL, the laid-back blue-collar worker is resigned to venture beyond the confines of his comfort zone for the first time in his existence.

Classic cameo appearances from equally classic videogame entities in: Super Mario, Pac-man, Sonic the Hedgehog, and his diabolical nemesis, Dr. Robotnik, pack a punch as hard as the line of in-jokes and delighting background stylish shennanigans.

‘I love the movie ‘Airplane!’ when I was a kid because there were so many absurd things in the back that you could pick out. To me, that’s just another great layer of comedy to give the audience. It wouldn’t be complete without a lot of that stuff!’ Moore added.

Sgt. Calhoun (Jane Lynch – ‘Glee’) commands with a ruthless, merciless, take-no-prisoners attitude as the space Marines leader. Calhoun’s primary objective – incapacitate deadly Cy-Bugs in ‘Hero’s Duty’; whereas a demonstration of  compassion and heart to the mantra and make-up of the military minded mercenary is prevelant behind the panache and vile veneer

‘Sugar Rush’ glitch Vanellope von Schweetz is a petulantly pesky creation who’s inclined to racing by all means necessary. Ralph enters ‘Sugar Rush’ with a medal, and the impressionable opportunist in Vanellope von Scweetz longs to alter her fortune based on the incentive being lured her direction.

Disney’s attempt to one-up Pixar at their own game has not fallen short. This fluorescent funride inside a ficticious arcade planet provides state-of-the-art retro, heart warming moments that is both captivating for all ages. Let the games begin!
