INTERVIEW :STOOSHE

South London girl group  Stooshe are at their best right now. With over thousands of views on their new video Love Me, which features – Gym Class Heroes‘ Travie McCoy. A List on Capital FM and Choice FM, shortlisted for the BBC Sound of 2012 list and signed to Warner Bros Records ,Stooshe are the definitely the hottest girl band in the UK  right now .

The Weekly Dairy got the pleasure of interviewing Courtney,Alex and Karis  and find out more about these bright and ambitious girls .

Hey Girls Hope you doing lovely?

All:We doing great thanks.

I have always been curious, How did “Stooshe” meet?

Alex: Well none of us knew each other, but me and Courtney both got spotted in Topshop whilst shopping (at different times), and we was asked by a friend of our creative director whether we could sing or not. We gave our details but didn’t take it seriously, then went down to the studio to sing for Jo Perry (creative director) She wanted 1 more girl and gave Karis a call to ask her if she wanted to be in a band (she knew her already from the days of MySpace!) then we all met up and clicked automatically. Got to writing and rehearsing and it just felt right!

How did you come up with the name “Stooshe”  ?

Courtney: we use the word ‘stoosh’ in London but we didn’t like the general meaning that everyone associates it with. We found out it also means stoned, hidden away, or a mystery. And we liked the contrast of meanings, so added the ‘she’ on the end for girl power! We also just found out that there is actually a word ‘stooshie’ and it means to cause havoc or be in a predicament so that’s perfect for us.

Your music is kind of a bit of everything, like a cocktail. How would you describe your music ?

Karis: We say it’s like urban pop, because it’s the most extreme pop that urban can go and the most extreme urban that pop can go. But then we throw some funk, some reggae, and a Motown feel all in the mix, and believe it or not we’ve got a ballad on the album! We just like to have fun while we’re making music.

Stooshe’s fashion style is so unique and edgy ,how would you describe “Stooshe’s ” fashion style ?

Courtney: We’re all really different, Karis loves the 50s era and that comes across in the way she dresses and her hair style, but then she’s got an urban edge with all her tattoos and her personality so we call her The Girlie Gangsta. She’ll b in a pencil skirt, a cute little jumper with her bangs ginger hair and ruby woo red lip, but the massive gold earrings , loads of rings , bling & her tattoos switch it up a bit. Alex is our glam girl, she is very glamorous and loved the 80s whole Versace supermodel look, so that’s her down to a T! She’ll be in a sick body con dress with a classy jacket over and some killer heels. Flicking her big long jet black hair as she walks that’s our Al lol! And then there’s me.I’m usually in a pair of crazy printed harem bottoms, a sick tee, then loadsa maddd bling, a fat gold chain, snap back with some jordans *Laughs*  I love my trainers… We call it ghettro, so we got a girly gangsta, the glam girl, and a ghettro girl! That’s Stooshe *Laughs*

With A lot of female bands and artists out there, how do you manage to keep up?

Karis: We’re just in our Stooshe bubble and focusing on what we’re doing and working hard towards all our goals! It’s not about keeping up or competition for us; we love that there are so many female artists coming up this year. It’s all about girl power and we’re just proud to be part of that! We got so much love for everyone else doing their thing at the moment, its gonna be a good year for the girls.

Your first single “Betty Was Gone” was it a true story ?

Alex: yes but she didn’t die and she’s not called Betty! It’s a serious issue and we just wanted to raise awareness that unfortunately things like that do happen, but we also wanted to get it across in a lighthearted way but with a Stooshe twist.

Your current single “Love me ” features Travie Mccoy – How did that come about ?

Courtney: Well he’s our label mate lucky for us! We wanted someone who was willing to have fun, and grasped the whole tongue in cheek type of lyrical content we have on the song, and he was perfect so we were delighted he agreed to do his thing on the track

I was in a mall in Qatar  a couple of weeks ago and i heard “Love me ” – I would say your music has travelled round and the people love Stooshe ,should we expect Stooshe in the Middle east anytime soon ?

Karis: I know its sooo crazy!!! My sister lived in Dubai for a few years and now she’s back in London but recently she’s had lots of her friends from Dubai call her saying ‘I keep hearing your sister on the radiooo!’ Its so crazy and overwhelming that people even know who we are outside of the UK. We will work hard and hopefully get to travel to lots of amazing places!

What keep Stooshe inspired and motivated ?

Alex: We’re always being told good news, like, ‘girls you’ve just been playlisted on this station’ etc, so every bit of amazing news adds to the stooshe momentum and it keeps us motivated because we wanted to make everyone proud! And also our families of course, they will always be our inspiration.

With this year is just beginning what should we expect this year from Stooshe ?

Courtney: more singles, lots of gigging, We’ve been confirmed for some amazing festivals this year including Wireless which is so sick, so its all really exciting, just keep an eye on our twitter (@stooshe), facebook (stooshe) and www.stooshe.com for all news and gigs etc.

Final Question for the Weekly Diary – Describe how Stooshe’s Week has been so far ?

Karis:  its been amazing, we’re on radio tour at the moment so we’ve been up and down the country meeting some wicked people! Having lots of fun as always and putting in lots of work preparing for the release of Love me on 4th March!
